  • Convención FEDELE 2018

    Once again it’s time for the FEDELE National Convention, a time for pooling the ideas we have on teaching Spanish in Spain and for understanding the trends of all aspects of the business sector.

    The convention will be held on the 15th and 16th February at the Hotel Vincci Soma in Madrid. A large number of member schools will be attending and they will have the opportunity of taking part in both the internal group sessions and the in-training talks for people in management.

    Representatives of the Instituto Cervantes, Turespaña and ICEX will provide a welcome ceremony to open the conference. This will be followed by the first presentation in which José Luis García Delgado will speak about the teaching of Spanish in Spain as an industry of the future.

    The sessions of working groups will begin after lunch and will be discussing various subjects of relevance to the sector, for instance international markets, human resources and student accommodation. These sessions will continue on Friday 16th.

    The FEDELE sectoral report will be presented at the Convention. This document uses comprehensive data to indicate trends in the teaching of Spanish from the point of view of the member schools. On the second day there will be presentations by Okapia Tools on the SIELE tests and on company values.

    There will be a closing ceremony at 17.00h

    Encuentro Práctico Holanda 2018

    The publishers Difusión and International House Barcelona have proposed holding another teacher training workshop in Holland, together with the Instituto Cervantes in Utrecht.

    This second workshop in Holland will be structured in the same way as other workshops held in Barcelona, Germany, Italy, France and Russia and other countries.

    The event will be held on the 9th and 10th Feruary and the programme will include the following talks and lectures:

    Friday, 9th February

    • 30-11.30: Enrolment and handing-in of documents
    • 30-12.00: Opening of the 2nd Teacher Training Workshop for Spanish as a Foreign Language in Holland
    • 00-13.00: Lecture: “Groups. A problem or an opportunity?” José Ángel Medina, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

    • 00-15.30: Workshops (first session)
    • 30-15.45: Break
    • 45-17.15: Forum discussion: “Teaching Spanish in Holland today. Needs and challenges.”

  • ECELE 2017

    A few days ago one of FEDELE’s main events of the year took place – ECELE (International Conference for Spanish Language Schools). This is the eighth year of celebrating the event.

    This year ECELE was held in Malaga as part of Malaga Education Week, a new event of professional workshops intended to focus the attention of people involved in language tourism and immersion courses abroad on Malaga.

    Judging by the results and the reactions of the participants, ECELE has been a resounding success and has provided an opportunity for sharing and getting to know the experiences of other international professionals involved in the Spanish language sector.

    The event began on Tuesday 9th January with a welcoming cocktail at Malaga Town Hall. This gave the schools and the visiting teachers their first chance to meet each other. The next day, Wednesday 10th January, was the official welcome when local officials and representatives of the various institutions expressed their gratitude for Malaga having been chosen as the place to hold the conference.

    The next activity was a presentation by each of the participating schools in a “Destination Fair” where every city had a school to represent them.

    In the afternoon, a training workshop was held on the role that games play in the classroom and a visit was organised to Malaga schools. In the evening FEDELE proposed visiting bars serving local tapas in smaller groups.

    On Thursday 11th January, individual meetings between the teachers and the member schools took place in two sessions, with a break for coffee in between. In the afternoon there was another session of visits to local schools and to Malaga museums. The conference ended with a closing ceremony and a flamenco performance.

    Without a doubt, ECELE has become an essential date for the Spanish Language Teaching sector, with every year showing an increase in objectives and results.

  • Université de Montreal

    The Quebec Association of Teachers of Spanish (APEQ) have announced that the organisation of the 7th Symposium of Spanish as a Foreign Language is now underway, with the collaboration of Montreal University and the Education Attaché of the Spanish Embassy in Canada. The symposium will take place on the 4th and 5th May.

    The subjects to be addressed at the event are as follows:

    • Methodological approaches for SFL.
    • Linguistics applied to the learning of SFL.
    • ICT in SFL.
    • Teaching materials for the SFL class.
    • Language and culture in the SFL class.
    • Rules and dialectal variations in the SFL class.
    • Educational frameworks and teacher training.

    APEQ, forms a part of the International Federation of Associations of Teachers of Spanish, FIAPE, and is already well-known for the events it organises in Canada.

    As they declare on their webpage, “The main objective of APEQ is to promote the Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language and information about Latin American civilisation at all levels of education, from primary school to university, through professional in-service training.”

  • Feliz 2018 desde FEDELE

    We’re already in the last few days of 2017 and we don’t want to let the year finish without remembering with our readers the most important moments of the year for FEDELE.

    The first activity of 2017 was, as usual, the annual convention of FEDELE schools, which has become a regular event in the calendar for the heads of FEDELE schools. On this occasion the training programme was very well received. There were activities dealing with various professional matters such as business leadership, labour law and Instituto Cervantes accreditation.

    The 1st Conference on Language Tourism in the Madrid Autonomous Community took place in February. This event was organized by the Madrid Autonomous Community together with the Instituto Cervantes and the Plataforma del Español.

    In 2017, the collaboration agreement between FEDELE and SIELE was signed. This agreement, which was ratified by the FEDELE President, Maricarmen Timor, and by Sara Alegría, as the representative of SIELE, will make it possible for member schools to become SIELE examination centres.

    In April, FEDELE, the publishers Edelsa and the Berlin and Munich Institutos Cervantes organized training days for teachers of Spanish in Germany.

    And in Madrid in May, FEDELE organized the 1st Meeting for Heads of Study of FEDELE schools. This event allowed Heads of Study of member schools to access a training programme specifically designed for their job profile.

    Once again this summer FEDELE has taken part in the summer course of “Spanish throughout the World”, which was organized by the Instituto Cervantes together with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid as part of the 30th Cursos de Verano Complutense at El Escorial.

    Without a doubt, the main focus for FEDELE activity this autumn has been ¡VAMOS! Español en España FEDELE Workshop 2017. This year the event included a programme of social networking in the cities of Ibiza and Palma from the 8th to the 11th October 2017. The workshop was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of the Agència de Turisme de les Illes Balears and the Consell Insular d´Eivissa and to the collaboration of Turespaña and the Instituto Cervantes.

    And in November for the first time a FEDELE open space conference #DesconFEDELE was held in Sevilla. The different format of this meeting for teachers of Spanish was a total success. In the future, open space conferences will be held in other FEDELE destinations like Barcelona, which has already been confirmed for next January.

  • San Petersburgo

    The 3rd Spanish as a Foreign Language Conference in Saint Petersburg is organised by the Academic Department of the Spanish language school Adelante with the collaboration of the Saint Petersburg State University and the publishers enClave-ELE and SGEL. The conference will take place on the 20th and 21st April at Adelante.

    The conferences are organised with the idea of creating an environment of cooperation for professionals involved in the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language in Saint Petersburg. They are also intended to provide a space for all SFL enthusiasts who wish to exchange experiences with colleagues and continue learning.

    The programme includes a variety of activities – lectures, practical workshops, presentations of publishers’ latest developments and round table discussions.

    The Organising Committee is made up of:

    • Oleg Shatrov (Academic Coordinator of the Spanish Language and Culture School Adelante)
    • Iban Mañas (Associate Professor of Spanish at the Saint Petersburg State University)

    The provisional programme includes the following plenary sessions:

    • Leticia Santana (enClave-ELE Education Representative): “And if we turn the class around?”
    • Carlos Barroso (SGEL Spanish as a Foreign Language Department Coordinator): “Towards a flexible class. How I adapt my manual to the needs of my pupils.”

  • Jornadas Difusión Madrid

    The 9th Difusión Training Days for Teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language, organized in collaboration with PROLINTER (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), will take place at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid on the 2nd and 3rd March.

    The Instituto Cervantes is participating in these sessions, which have moved to a different location from other years, and FEDELE and SIELE are sponsoring them.

    The 3rd University of Barcelona – SGEL Forum will take place at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Barcelona on the 9th March. The forum is entitled Education and Communication applied to the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language: perspectives for the 21st century.

    Talks and workshops will be given by speakers of the stature of Francisco Jiménez Calderón, Ana Carina Gambluch, Vicenta González, Estefanía Duretz Guillén, José Manuel Ruiz Fernández and Javier González Romero.

    The only requirement for enrolment is to send an email to ele@sgel.es with the following information: full name and information of place of work.

    Last date for enrolment: 2nd March 2018. Places are limited.

  • UniPro Munich

    The main idea behind the 1st UniPro Congress is to collect and invigorate proposals concerning the Spanish language and its teaching coming from teachers and researchers who are working in universities or other professional situations (companies or teacher training institutions) anywhere in the world.

    The congress is intended to encourage debate and an exchange of ideas between teachers and researchers in order to investigate these matters. The event is organised by two lecturers at the University of Applied Languages at the Munich Institute for Languages and Interpreting, Carmen Ramos and Pilar Salamanca.

    The main programme will have two plenary sessions:

    • Opening lecture: Frederic Parrilla (CLIC IH Sevilla, Cádiz and Málaga). “Beyond the linguistic remit: the Spanish language classroom as a space to develop professional skills and talent.”
    • Closing lecture: Encarna Atienza(Universitat Pompeu Fabra). “Teaching, learning and evaluating a critical attitude: how to train university students as social agents and future professionals.”

    The organisers of the event explain that “The 1st UniPro Congress offers three formats for contributions: the first is more theoretical and is directed towards research projects; the second is highly practical and concerns teaching proposals and the third is for video presentations and is intended for people unable to attend the congress in Munich. Contributions for the first two groups should be of less than 45 minutes. Videos should be a maximum of 15 minutes. All proposals should be previously unpublished.”

  • DesconFEDELE

    As we have already announced to our readers, FEDELE has begun a series of educational events for our teachers. These meetings have been given an “un-conference” format with the aim of sharing practical experiences and all sorts of ideas for planning and managing Spanish classes.

    The “un-conference” format has many names both in Spanish (no-congresoconferencia de espacios abiertos) and in English (unconference,  open space conferencebarcamp). All these names refer to the same concept: a meeting of professionals from a particular sector who come together to share and experiment. It provides a quick and efficient way of practising collective intelligence and netlearning.

    We have adapted this concept at FEDELE to meet our own teaching needs, using teaching objectives and working procedures proposed by the participants. From the beginning it is the group who decides which problems they are going to try to solve and how. Problem-based learning (PBL) is a fundamental part of this approach.

    The #DesconFEDELEs have a coordinator/moderator who proposes strategies, guides discussions and ensures that the guidelines created by the group are kept to. Each session begins with a discussion about aims and procedures. Workgroups are then created (these are flexible) which raise questions and their possible solutions. All this flow of work is collected in an internal collaborative document (on Google Drive) and also shared on networks. Outside proposals can also be incorporated with the hashtag #DesconFEDELE, principally on Twitter.

    The first #DesconFEDELE which took place in Seville on 2nd November had Antonio Orta, Head of the Spanish Department at CLIC International House Sevilla, PhD in Modern Languages from the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, as the coordinator. The participants were very enthusiastic about their objectives and learning and very pleased with both the process and the results of this #DesconFEDELE.
