  • Informe 2017 El español: una lengua viva

The 2017 report from the Instituto Cervantes, “Spanish: a living language” has recently been published. This report was written by David Fernández Vítores and coordinated from the Dirección Académica of the Instituto Cervantes. The structure of the report is the usual one for this type of publication.

Firstly, statistics for Spanish throughout the world are given. The second chapter deals with Spanish as a Foreign Language and its position in various different educational systems. In the third chapter an overall picture of Spanish as an economic asset is discussed and this leads to a section on Spanish and the internet and social networks. The report ends with a chapter on Spanish in science and culture and a bibliography.

The statistics given in the report indicate that “Spanish is the second most widely spoken native language after Mandarin and also the second most widely spoken language on a global count of native proficiency + limited competence + students of Spanish”.

An approximate calculation can also be made in global figures of twenty-one million students choosing Spanish for career purposes. This places Spanish in direct competition with French and Mandarin as the second most widely studied language. It is striking that interest in learning Spanish is especially apparent in the two main English speaking countries – the United States and the United Kingdom.

Anyone wishing to see the entire report can download a PDF version with with this link.

  • CLIC International House Cádiz

CLIC International House has just opened new premises in Bahía Blanca in the provincial capital of Cádiz. The property comprises 700m2 on two floors – the main floor and a top floor/terrace.

The new school has 12 classrooms all equipped with a multimedia projector or smart TV, free wifi, air-conditioning and central heating. All the classrooms have natural light and furniture designed to make learning a second language more comfortable.

The top floor also has a professional kitchen for cookery classes and a spacious student lounge with a café which is used for the cultural programme activities and for language exchange amongst CLIC students.

The enormous 200m2 terrace next to the student lounge is definitely the area that the students enjoy the most. It is equipped with outdoor furniture and hammocks and students can have a coffee between classes and prepare work for the following day with their fellow classmates. Or simply read a book. Views from the new CLIC premises are spectacular.

  • FEDELE

On the 9th June, Carmen Timor and Ana Cózar, president and manager of FEDELE respectively, held a meeting with the Department for Educational Planning at the Ministry of Education. The Department was represented by José María Fernández Lacasa, Director General of Management and Educational Planning at the Ministry of Education and David Ferrán Priestley, Deputy Director General for International Cooperation and Overseas Educational Development.

This meeting provided FEDELE with the first contact with the Ministry of Education and a chance to introduce the Spanish as a Foreign Language sector in Spain, the work of FEDELE and their main needs with regard to the Ministry. With this in mind, FEDELE brought up the following subjects:

    • A general presentation of FEDELE and its member schools, general information, relationships with other institutions (Instituto Cervantes, Turespaña and ICEX). Here we emphasised that FEDELE and the Ministry of Education share the common goal of promoting Spain as an educational destination.
    • The need to develop a common strategy for the teaching of Spanish in Spain using the Ministry’s network of Education Departments found throughout the world. We explained the relationships FEDELE already has with many of the Education Departments but explained that there was a need for a common plan that could be applied to the entire network.
    • Register of schools not regulated by the Ministry of Education – visas. Here we spoke of the need for our schools to be registered with the Ministry of Education in order to facilitate the application for visas. We asked about the possibility of accredited schools being registered in the Ministry’s non-regulated schools register which currently doesn’t include any private Spanish language schools.
    • The possibility of offering university credits for specific courses offered by our schools.

The representatives of the Ministry emphasised the interest being shown by the Ministry of Education in joining forces to attract more students of Spanish to Spain and at the same time to increase international interest in studying Spanish in public education. They explained that the Spanish government is currently designing a strategic plan for the international promotion of Spanish.

For FEDELE this was a great opportunity to present the educational offer of our member schools and also to establish a way of collaborating with the government which plays a fundamental role in the teaching of Spanish.

  • CREA Isla Salamanca
CREA is an event for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers, both native and non-native speakers and also for trainee teachers. This session, which aims to create a space for dialogue in which impressions and experiences can be shared, is organised by ISLA, a Spanish language school which has been operating for more than twenty-five years. Different technological and dynamic resources for the Spanish as a Foreign Language classroom will be presented within a participatory environment to encourage the exchange of the participants’ different points of view.

This aim is consistent with the spirit which has defined ISLA in the last few years, that of constant creation and evaluation of new teaching materials, tools which adapt to the new type of student and teacher. ISLA is committed to creating online resources, 160 of which are already freely accessible, and to the creation of new classroom activities.

CREA will be focussed on new technologies and innovative proposals for the Spanish as a Foreign Language classroom and this focus will link the various talks and workshops. There will also be spaces, generally in the afternoon, where more classical topics will be dealt with, for example music and image in the SFL classroom and, especially for non-native teachers, the teaching of Spanish grammar.

CREA’s main objective is the exchange of ideas among the participants and there will, therefore, be a considerable amount of time made available for open discussion and for putting into practice with real students ideas which arise during the discussions and workshops. Two new projects, “El Espejo” and “Tú decides”, will be presented at the conference.

Everyone attending the event will be able to take part in all the afternoon and evening activities on the programme, these include a welcome drink, a cookery class, wine tasting and pairing and an open-air farewell party.
