The Instituto Cervantes and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid are collaborating once again on the 30th Cursos de Verano Complutense en El Escorial. The course will take place from the 10th to 12th of July at the San Lorenzo site at El Escorial. This year’s programme is entitled “Spanish throughout the world, a sustainable economic asset”.

As the Instituto Cervantes itself indicates, “From a multi-faceted perspective, the course “Spanish throughout the world: a sustainable economic asset” is intended to provide key points for an effective management of learning and teaching of foreign languages. To reach this goal, thought will be given to the changes and challenges in language teaching and to the activity in relevant sectors – teaching, tourism, employment, education, technology and communication. Special attention will be paid to the spread of the Spanish language and the performance of institutions in this area will be analysed.”

A series of very varied topics will be dealt with during the course, all of them related to the central theme of the programme: the changes which enable the growth of Spanish in different countries and the response of international companies and public and private educational institutions teaching Spanish to new global demands, a response which is conditioned by the training of professionals and the use of technology in language learning.

The course is intended for both professionals and students involved in language teaching. The conference is based around two plenary sessions and a round-table discussion on each of the three days of the conference.

We are pleased to announce that on the 31st March and the 1st April the 6th CIEFE (International Congress for Spanish for Specific Purposes) will be held in Amsterdam. This event is being organised by the Department of Education for Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg together with the University of Amsterdam and the Instituto Cervantes of Utrecht.

The organising committee is formed by the following people: Anna Escofet (University of Ámsterdam), Andreu van Hooft (Radboud University, Nimega), Kristi Jauregui (University of Utrecht and University of Applied Sciences, Fontys), Bob de Jonge (University of Groningen), Paula Lorente (University of Lovaina), Lieve Vangehuchten (University of Amberes) and Otto Zwartjes (University of Ámsterdam).

Since its beginnings in 2000, the CIEFE has become an essential event for specialist teachers of Spanish for Specific Purposes and generally for all teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language. As the organisation itself makes clear, the CIEFE congresses “have provided a place for researchers into Spanish for Specific Purposes, teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language and specialist publishers to meet and exchange experiences.”

The aims for the Congress, as laid out on their website, are as follows:

    • To establish an international framework for the publication of recent research
    • To exchange teaching experiences
    • To review the state of Spanish for Specific Purposes
    • To promote actions leading to the development of Spanish as a means for professional relationships

The Cádiz Latin  American Theatre Festival (FIT) has taken place in Cádiz every October since 1985.  From 1986 – 1992 it was directed by Juan Margallo.  There are both street performances and performances in various venues – the Gran Teatro Falla, the Sala Central Lechera and the Baluarte de la Candelaria amongst others.

The FIT is an ideal platform for providing support to Latin American theatre arts.  The main objective of this year´s festival is to continue to assist the future development of Latin American theatre.  This has been the case from the very beginning.  Different performances will again be providing a sample of the most representative theatre groups in Latin America today,   The festival brings together Spanish and Latin American companies and performing arts.  As well as theatre productions the programme includes a wide range of other complementary activities.

This multidisciplinary festival offers a chance to enjoy performances of theatre, dance and music and art exhibitions.  It has a family atmosphere and makes available a common space where theatre performances, international meetings, conferences, the presentation of projects and publications, workshops and forums are held with groups attending the festival, all coordinated by experts from Latin America.

The FIT has received many prizes for its work in Spain and Latin America, the most important being the  Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (Gold Medal for Merit in the Arts) in 2003 and UNESCO´s official patronage in 1994.  It has also been a partner festival  with the Festival de Teatro de La Habana (Cuba, 1995), Festival Latinoamericano de Teatro de Manizales (México, 1996), the FITAZ de La Paz (Bolivia, 2002) and the Festival de las Artes de Costa Rica (2008).

This is the 30th year for the Festival Iberoamericana de Teatro which will be celebrated from the 16th to the 24th October.  There will be performances in the streets of Cádiz every day.  This is a unique occasion for theatre lovers and lovers of Latin American culture.

More information is available on the FIT web site.

As has been reported in the press, from October there will be specific requirements for acquiring Spanish nationality.

Firstly, it will be necessary to pass a test demonstrating a basic knowledge of the Spanish language: the DELE Spanish diploma, level A2 or higher.  Secondly, there will be a test to demonstrate a knowledge of the Spanish constitution and the current social and cultural situation in Spain: the CCSE (Constitutional and socio-cultural knowledge of Spain).

The CCSE tests will be held on the last Thursday of every month (except August and December) at a time given by the Instituto Cervantes.  The test has been developed by the Instituto Cervantes and is made up of twenty-five multiple choice questions.

Some questions will have three possible answers, only one of which is correct.  Others will have a true/false answer.  The test will last 45 minutes and will be carried out in the modern-day Spanish spoken in Spain.

The CCSE test will be held at schools recognised by the Instituto Cervantes.  We will be giving more information about the list of schools on this blog when the definitive list has been drawn up.
