  • redELE
    The portal redELE (a digital network for Spanish as a Foreign Language) is, without a doubt, one of the most long-standing publications dealing with Spanish as a Foreign Language. It is a service supplied by the Spanish Ministry of Education and is aimed at teachers all over the world.

    RedELE contains different sections of information and the following publications are amongst the most important:

    • The magazine, which has texts about teaching, teaching materials and ideas and information from conferences, all for teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language or a Second Language.
    • The library, which has PhD theses and MA dissertations and other research papers.

    The aim of the network, as explained on the webpage, is to offer “specific information on the teaching of Spanish and to contribute to teacher training”.

    Other sections of redELE provide access to research like “The world studies Spanish”; basic information on Spanish in Spain; publications of the Ministry of Education Overseas (listed by country) and catalogues that the Resource Centres have available for teachers.

    Once again at this time of year we would like to propose a review of 2016, using the blog to see what 2016 has meant for FEDELE and for the Spanish as a Foreign Language sector. This summary of twelve pieces of news allows us to see a more global picture of the current situation of ELE.

    • 2016 began with the announcement that the FEDELE Annual Meeting, the big annual event for schools and international agencies working with Spanish as a Foreign Language would take place in Alicante.
    • In February it was announced that FEDELE would take part in the Olimpiadas del Españalo in Poznan, Poland.
    • A month later we wrote about FEDELE’s sponsorship of the Torneo Internacional de Lenguas in Malmö, Suecia.
    • In April we started up a new campaign on Instagram to publicise the FEDELE member schools on this social network.
    • The following month we were pleased to present the new digital corporate image of FEDELE:new logo and webpage.
    • In June we announced the programme for the course Coping successfully with foreign language teaching: evaluating options and making decisions, organised by the Instituto Cervantes and at which our president, Mª Carmen Timor, presented the paper, “ How to convert a Spanish language programme into a life experience”.
    • In July, we announced the organisation of the 7th International Conference for Spanish Language Schools (ECELE) in Sevilla
    • And in August the participation of FEDELE in the Spanish Ambassador Competition 2016 in Hungary.
    • During these months we also carried out the “Student of the Week” campaign so that member schools could become known to readers through the experience of students.
    • And the blog has also provided a space for news which schools wanted to share with the ELE community – anniversaries, new premises and various events.
    • In November we wrote about the new portal for the Instituto Cervantes’ exams where all the information about DELE, CCSE and SIELE exams is now centralised.
    • And the year ended with news of the Prize for an outstanding academic career in the teaching of Spanish, this year awarded to Ernesto Martín Peris.

  • Premio International House a la carrera académica del profesorado de español

    The prize for an outstanding academic career in the teaching of Spanish, awarded by the International House schools in Spain (Barcelona, Cadiz, Madrid, Seville, Palma, San Sebastian and Valencia) together with the publishers Difusión, was presented to Ernesto Martín Peris at a prize-giving ceremony on the 16th December.

    Ernesto Martín Peris, emeritus professor at the University of Pompeu Fabra and the first academic director of the Instituto Cervantes, is a very well-known figure in the academic sector of Spanish as a Foreign Language teaching. As well as his experience as a teacher of ELE, while he was working as a professor at the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Barcelona, he developed some celebrated teaching material which includes Gente and Bitácora.

    According to the committee organising the prize, “The criteria used for awarding the prize are: classroom experience, contributions to different aspects of the world of Spanish (teaching, publications, research, teacher training…) and the carrying out of professional work in different environments (public or private, in Spain or abroad, in statutory education or non-regulated schooling.”

    On this occasion the organising committee for the International House Prize for an outstanding academic career in Spanish teaching has been made up by a representative from each of the International House schools in Spain and the person responsible for Spanish at Difusión:

    • Antonio Orta (CLIC International House Sevilla)
    • Ignacio Grande (Lacunza International House San Sebastián)
    • Francisco Herrera (CLIC International House Cádiz)
    • Berta Sarralde (International House Madrid)
    • María Luisa Mateu (Españolé International House Valencia)
    • Begoña Montmany (International House Barcelona y Palma)
    • Agustín Garmendia (Editorial Difusión)

    The aim of the prize is to recognise the work of Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers and the continued effort to improve the quality of teaching. The ceremony was conducted by Francisco Herrera and the prize was presented by Jonathan Dykes, Director of International House Barcelona and Agustín Garmendia from Difusión. The ceremony was carried out as part of the programme of the Practical Course for Teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language in Barcelona, in the presence of nearly six hundred teachers.

    We are pleased to announce that on the 31st March and the 1st April the 6th CIEFE (International Congress for Spanish for Specific Purposes) will be held in Amsterdam. This event is being organised by the Department of Education for Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg together with the University of Amsterdam and the Instituto Cervantes of Utrecht.

    The organising committee is formed by the following people: Anna Escofet (University of Ámsterdam), Andreu van Hooft (Radboud University, Nimega), Kristi Jauregui (University of Utrecht and University of Applied Sciences, Fontys), Bob de Jonge (University of Groningen), Paula Lorente (University of Lovaina), Lieve Vangehuchten (University of Amberes) and Otto Zwartjes (University of Ámsterdam).

    Since its beginnings in 2000, the CIEFE has become an essential event for specialist teachers of Spanish for Specific Purposes and generally for all teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language. As the organisation itself makes clear, the CIEFE congresses “have provided a place for researchers into Spanish for Specific Purposes, teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language and specialist publishers to meet and exchange experiences.”

    The aims for the Congress, as laid out on their website, are as follows:

    • To establish an international framework for the publication of recent research
    • To exchange teaching experiences
    • To review the state of Spanish for Specific Purposes
    • To promote actions leading to the development of Spanish as a means for professional relationships

    The 7th FONCEI (the National Forum for teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language organised by the Cervantes International School) will take place on the 27th and 28th of January 2017.

    The slogan for the meeting is to be “Returning to Never Never Land” and the main subject to be discussed will be the teaching of Spanish to children and adolescents.

    A series of questions has been proposed for discussion during the conference:

    • How can creativity be awakened?
    • What activities should I take to the classroom?
    • What methods can I work with?
    • How can critical thinking be encouraged?
    • What games work?
    • How can I improve participation?
    • What do children and adolescents feel and think?
    • How much can they retain?
    • Do social networks help learning in the classroom?
    • Is there an age for playing?
    • Do publishers have suitable manuals for meeting the needs of these pupils?

    Teachers working with children and adolescents are always thinking about what activities they can use and how to make their classes more attractive and keep their pupils attention.

    The FONCEI will once again be counting on the participation of speakers from the sector and of various publishers.

    The Malaga museum MUPAM will become a bridge to Never Never Land for the duration of the conference.

  • formación de profesorado ELE Bósforo

    The 3rd conference on Training of Teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language will take place in a few weeks time in Istanbul. The conference is organised by the Directorate for Educational Programmes in Turkey, the Instituto Cervantes in Istanbul and the Spanish Department of the Bosphorus University. Teachers from different Turkish educational institutions and representatives of Spanish as a Foreign Language publishers will all be taking part. Following are some of the subjects to be addressed at the conference:

    • CLIL projects
    • Online materials
    • Play and learn
    • How to deal with mistakes
    • The teaching of peculiarities
    • Digital narratives

    The last date for enrolment is the 30th November. There are sixty-five places available. The conference will be held in the Kuzey Park building at the Bosphoru University.

  • exámenes cervantes

    A few weeks ago, the Instituto Cervantes launched their new portal for the official examinations. This means great progress for the organisation of all the exams – DELE, CCSE and SIELE. The graphics on the new webpage have changed and all the information regarding the exams can now be found on one page.

    People interested in consulting general information on the Instituto Cervantes’ exams can now do so on the new portal examenes.cervantes.es.   They will also be able to see their marks for the DELE and CCSE exams, manage their requests for marks to be reviewed and sign up to sit the DELE exams in Spain.

    For the school exams A1 and A2/ B1, enrolment will still take place in the school where the exam is to be taken. The new portal also offers information for schools interested in becoming an exam centre and for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers interested in becoming accredited examiners.

    As you can see, for the first time in the history of the Instituto Cervantes, information and management of various services can be found altogether in one space. It must be remembered that the incorporation of these services into internet means that users need to register beforehand. From November, candidates wishing to access the results of their DELE exams should do so using their email address.

    Next February the University of Uppsala is organising a Spanish as a Foreign Language Conference in Stockhom. The event will be sponsored by the Instituto Cervantes of Uppsala.

  • Congreso NY

    The first conference on the new trends in the teaching of Spanish will take place in New York on the 4th and 5th November. The event is organised by the Instituto Cervantes together with Princeton and Columbia Universities.

    The aims for the conference, according to the organisers, are twofold:

    •  Firstly, to analyse the current situation of the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language and how it has evolved in the last few years.
    • Secondly, to establish a meeting place where teachers of Spanish can exchange ideas and experiences.

  • Ten Idiomas Jerez

    Tenidiomas in Jerez de la Frontera has recently completed a total refurbishment of its facilities; one which has doubled the number of classrooms to thirteen, each fully equipped with smart-boards, air-conditioning and heating.

    The building, located in the very heart of the historic centre of the city, is fully accessible and now on two floors connected by lift and stairs. Facilities include reading area, library, staff room and enlarged reception.

    According to Gerry Rylance, director, “The new facilities will improve the learning experience for our students by providing a comfortable user friendly environment and despite the size of the new school Tenidiomas maintains its family atmosphere”.

    Tenidiomas is the only FEDELE language school in Jerez de la Frontera. Located in the province of Cadiz the city is well known for its strong links with authentic flamenco, horse-breeding and sherry production.
