    The first conference on the new trends in the teaching of Spanish will take place in New York on the 4th and 5th November. The event is organised by the Instituto Cervantes together with Princeton and Columbia Universities.

    The aims for the conference, according to the organisers, are twofold:

    •  Firstly, to analyse the current situation of the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language and how it has evolved in the last few years.
    • Secondly, to establish a meeting place where teachers of Spanish can exchange ideas and experiences.

    The programme for the conference is as follows:

    
Friday 4th November
    16.00 – 16.45h: Coffee, enrolment and distribution of material
    16.45 – 17.00h: Presentation of the conference
    17.00 – 19.00h: Where have we come from? Where are we? And where are we going? Reflections on Spanish as a Foreign Language teaching materials. Neus Sans, Difusión.

    
Saturday 5th November:
    9.30 – 11.00h: Language and image: cognitive representations and grammatical meaning in aspectual contrast. Plácido Ruiz Campillo, Columbia University.
    11.00 – 11.30h: Coffee.
    11.30 – 13.00h: Towards an interactive learning focus: the Aprendo platform as an innovative teaching tool. Anais Holgado Lage, Dunia Catalina Méndez Vallejo, Adriana Meriño, Le Anne Spino-Seijas and Sylvia Zetterstrand. Princeton University.

  • Ten Idiomas Jerez

    Tenidiomas in Jerez de la Frontera has recently completed a total refurbishment of its facilities; one which has doubled the number of classrooms to thirteen, each fully equipped with smart-boards, air-conditioning and heating.

    The building, located in the very heart of the historic centre of the city, is fully accessible and now on two floors connected by lift and stairs. Facilities include reading area, library, staff room and enlarged reception.

    According to Gerry Rylance, director, “The new facilities will improve the learning experience for our students by providing a comfortable user friendly environment and despite the size of the new school Tenidiomas maintains its family atmosphere”.

    Tenidiomas is the only FEDELE language school in Jerez de la Frontera. Located in the province of Cadiz the city is well known for its strong links with authentic flamenco, horse-breeding and sherry production.

  • AIL Madrid

    AIL Madrid is celebrating its 10th birthday with style! Their original school in the Salamanca district was starting to feel a little tight, so it is with great excitement that they have recently announced their birthday present to themselves: a new flagship center and head office.

    Over the last 12 months the AIL team (including teachers, students, architects, artists, and interior designers) tried hard to create an environment perfect for language learning. These efforts have resulted in a modern, soothing, and spacious school with the latest technology and student comforts, featuring 11 state of the art sunlit classrooms, open student study zones, hand painted murals of Madrid, and a fully equipped kitchen for cooking classes. Though they have experienced their fair share of setbacks and bumps along the way, the end result is educationally stimulating and something to be genuinely proud of.

    Initial student feedback has been very positive with intensive Spanish student Silvia, 25 from the UK, commenting “my class moved (favorite teacher and all) to the new center without a hitch and I love the new space! At both AIL centers there is always someone to greet you with a huge smile, help you find your classroom, and give you tips on navigating Madrid – it’s like my extended family.”

  • Instituto Cervantes de Viena

    In less than a couple of weeks, on the 14th and 15th October, the 3rd Training Session at the Instituto Cervantes in Vienna will take place. This event, which will deal with the teaching of Spanish to children and young people, is organised with the collaboration of  the Education Office of the Spanish Embassy in Vienna, the Austrian Association of Teachers of Spanish and the publishers Edinumen.

    The programme is as follows:

    Friday 14th October

    16.00h: Greetings and presentation

    16.15h – 19.30h: “Affective and effective learning of Spanish in classes for young people”, Jane Arnold, University of Seville and Language and Cultural Encounters.

    Saturday, 15th October

    09.00h – 12.15h: “Techniques and resources to stimulate learning in foreign language classes for children aged 7 to 12”, Izabella Hearn, author (SM, Pearson, Oxford University Press and Bookmark África).

  • Grebnoble coloquio

    As in previous years, this November, on the 24th and 25th, the International Symposium on Languages for Specific Purposes (LOSP) will take place in Grenoble, France. The theme this year is “Between Linguistics and Didactics” and the event is once again organised by the Université Grenoble Alpes.

    The Symposium will include plenary lectures by the following people:

    • Alex Boulton, Université Nancy,

    • María García Antuña, Centro Universitario Fundación Comillas

    • Mercè Pujol, Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense.

    The main topics are as follows:

    1. Didactic approaches in the teaching of specialised language and culture.

    2. Corpora and languages for specific purposes.

    3. Multimodality and teaching languages for specific purposes.

    Enrolment is available at a special rate until the 30th September. Closing date for enrolment is the 20th October. Reduced rates are as follows:

    •    University students: special price 100 euros before 30/09/2016.
    •    Doctoral students: 50 euros.
    •    Members of the ILCEA4-GREMUTS and LIDILEM laboratories: enrolment is free.

    The publishers Edinumen are once again organising the ProfELE conference at the  Georg-August-Universität Göttingen with the aim of assisting the training of Spanish teachers in Germany. This will be the fifth such conference.

    Different specialists in the teaching of Spanish will be taking part in the conference which provides an ideal space for sharing with other teachers experiences and teaching proposals for the Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language classroom.

    The programme for the event is as follows:

    Saturday 5th November. Georg-August-Universität Göttingen

    • 10.00-10.15h. Opening of the conference.
    • 10.15-11.30h. María Carmen Herrero (Manchester Metropolitan University). “Film and The development of intercultural communicative competence in the Spanish language classroom as L2/FL.”

    • 12.00-13.15h. Alicia Mellado (Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha). “Let’s speak clearly”
    • 13.15-14.15h. Lunch break.
    • 14.15-15.15h. Álvaro Sesmilo (Edinumen publishers). “Help me to look: symbols, metaphors and creativity in the learning of an L2”
    • 15.15-15.35h. Break.
    • 15.35-18.10h. Practical experiences.

    Each workshop will be a maximum of forty minutes and there are various time slots. The University of La Rioja are collaborating by raffling one of their online postgraduate courses for the teaching of Spanish amongst people taking part in the conference.

    As on previous occasions the conference is officially recognised by the Niedersächsisches Landesinstitut für schulische Qualitätsentwicklung (NLQ).  In order to obtain a certificate, people attending the conference will have to enrol at VeDaB.

    We are pleased to let our readers know that the 6th International Congress of Language Tourism will be taking place shortly, from the 26th to the 29th October in Ciudad de Salta, Argentina. The value of language as an economic, cultural and tourism resource will be analysed under the slogan International Education and Cultural Exchange as Factors of Development.

    The event is organised by SEA, Asociación de Centros de Idiomas, the Argentinian Ministry of Tourism and the Universidad Católica de Salta. The academic coordination will be carried out by the University of Salvador and FLACSO (Facultad Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales) Argentina.

     The conference programme includes the following activities:

    • The government sector: civil servants of national governments, provincial governments and town councils involved in the development and promotion of culture, education, tourism and  destinations.
    • Tourism sector: tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers, students, teachers and professionals  involved in exchanges, cultural products and international student mobility.
    • Intermediary entities: chambers of commerce, associations, federations and other intermediary organisations related to the development of language and cultural tourism and with international student mobility.

    For a few years now, people interested in the teaching of Spanish have had a Twitter account available to them – Canal_ELE, giving information about events and the most important news in the ELE sector.

    The account was created to share information in an open way. Readers receive information about teaching events, publications, training, debates, resources, analysis of the sector and everything that may be of interest to professionals involved in the teaching of Spanish both in Spain and abroad.

    At the same time all this information is distributed on other platforms e.g. Flipboard magazine and Telegram messaging service. The International House online teacher training programme for Spanish teachers (formacionele.com) is responsible for the account.

  • Embajador de España en Hungría 2016

    We are pleased to let our readers know that FEDELE and the Spanish Embassy in Hungary have agreed to collaborate on the programme Spanish Ambassador 2016, a competition which will be launched by the Education Attaché Office in Hungary in September of this year.

    The programme has been in operation since 1988 and this year the nine bilingual sections of the country will be taking part. As usual, the embassy will be responsible for the nationwide promotion of the competition in different media.

    FEDELE and the schools that wish to collaborate are providing the prize for the two winners of the competition.  The prize will be a one-week Spanish course in Spain and will include accommodation in a host family with half-board.

    The competition will start in September and finish at the end of October. The course dates will be agreed by the winners and the selected schools, although it’s expected that they will take place by next spring at the latest. Once the competition is finished, the winners will decide from amongst all the schools taking part where they want to do their course.

    Now that the holidays are almost over and the new academic year is about to begin, ASELE (Association for the Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language) is organising the 27th International Congress, from the 7th to the 10th September, in the city of  Logroño under the auspices of the University of La Rioja.

    The main theme of this year’s congress is the concept of  Panhispanism and the role of different ways of Teaching Spanish as a Foreign or as a Second Language.

    The specific themes for this year’s conference are as follows:

    1. The sociolinguistic perspective of the Teaching of Spanish as a L2-FL:
    •    In a school context (private and public education): children, adolescents and adults
    •    For professional activities (sociological and technical jargon)
    •    Non-literate learners, immigrants and refugees

    2. The geographical, regulatory and geopragmatic perspective of the learning and teaching of L2-FL in relation to:
    •    Polycentrism and systematic dialect varieties in Spanish
    •    Pluricentrism and its didactic methodology
    •    Phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical variations of the Spanish language
    •    Sociolinguistic, discursive and cultural diversity of Spanish speaking countries
    •    The expression of emotions, feelings and forms of social interactions of Spanish speakers
    •    The language of gestures in Spanish societies

    3. Perspective of language policy in Spanish speaking countries on:
    •    The current position of Spanish as a L2-FL
    •    National actions and collaboration on language policy for Teaching Spanish as a L2-FL
    •    Panhispanic dimension and global Spanish in the Learning and Teaching of Spanish as a L2-FL
    •    Spanish L2-FL curricula in Spanish speaking countries
    •    The Teaching of Spanish as L1, L2 and FL in multilingual contexts (USA, Brazil, Spanish speaking countries with Amerindian languages, Spain)
