Over the last ten years a series of barcamp training events have appeared in the teaching world. These barcamps or user-generated conferences are professional events in which all participants take part in a very active way. They are different from the more traditional conferences and meetings in that they are organised not vertically, but horizontally, one to one, paying particular attention to:

    • participation
    • cooperation
    • collaborative creation of knowledge

At FEDELE we are convinced that this type of format is highly productive, especially for teachers of Spanish who are used to collaborating and sharing with their colleagues. For this reason we at FEDELE are backing the organisation of various barcamps at which teachers from FEDELE schools can (and should) work together with teachers from other schools.

The FEDELE barcamps for teachers of Spanish will have the following work schedule:

    9.30 – 11.00h: Working groups
    11.00 – 11.30h: Break
    11.30 – 13.00h: Working groups
13.00 – 14.00h: Presentation of results, discussion and reflection
    14.00 – 15.30: Lunch provided by FEDELE
15.30-18.00: Training workshop given by the driving force behind the barcamp

This first barcamp event will take place in Sevilla on Saturday 4th November and will be led by Antonio Orta. Antonio has a doctorate in Modern Languages, Translation and Spanish as a Foreign Language from the University of Palo de Olavide. The subject of his thesis was initial teacher training and educational innovation. He is currently Head of the SpanishDepartment at CLIC International House Sevilla. He also teaches on the Masters programme for teachers of Spanish at the University of Pablo de Olavide in Seville and on the training and refresher course Diploma for Teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language at the Universitat de València.

FEDELE member schools are all guaranteed a free place at the barcamps and additional places are available for only 20€. For more information please contact the secretary of FEDELE.

  • CREA Isla Salamanca
CREA is an event for Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers, both native and non-native speakers and also for trainee teachers. This session, which aims to create a space for dialogue in which impressions and experiences can be shared, is organised by ISLA, a Spanish language school which has been operating for more than twenty-five years. Different technological and dynamic resources for the Spanish as a Foreign Language classroom will be presented within a participatory environment to encourage the exchange of the participants’ different points of view.

This aim is consistent with the spirit which has defined ISLA in the last few years, that of constant creation and evaluation of new teaching materials, tools which adapt to the new type of student and teacher. ISLA is committed to creating online resources, 160 of which are already freely accessible, and to the creation of new classroom activities.

CREA will be focussed on new technologies and innovative proposals for the Spanish as a Foreign Language classroom and this focus will link the various talks and workshops. There will also be spaces, generally in the afternoon, where more classical topics will be dealt with, for example music and image in the SFL classroom and, especially for non-native teachers, the teaching of Spanish grammar.

CREA’s main objective is the exchange of ideas among the participants and there will, therefore, be a considerable amount of time made available for open discussion and for putting into practice with real students ideas which arise during the discussions and workshops. Two new projects, “El Espejo” and “Tú decides”, will be presented at the conference.

Everyone attending the event will be able to take part in all the afternoon and evening activities on the programme, these include a welcome drink, a cookery class, wine tasting and pairing and an open-air farewell party.

  • Enele2017

Enele is a project designed and coordinated by Jane Arnold, the academic director of Language and Cultural Encounters, to provide Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers with the opportunity to meet together with other teachers from all over the world and to reflect on their work, at the same time as developing their skills working on important proposals from the current scene of Spanish as a Foreign Language.

As Jane Arnold says, “Enele offers the perfect occasion for combining usefulness with pleasure.” The programme has once again been prepared “with great care in order to help us develop as teachers.” And additionally, “There can be nothing better than sharing experiences with other teachers from all over the world in a setting as pleasant as the city of Cadiz.”

This is the third time this type of meeting has been held. Last year fifty teachers from fifteen countries including the UK, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Italy, USA, Argentina, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Algeria, and Russia met up in Cadiz. As the academic director of LCE has said, “In the two previous encounters real communities have been created, sharing experiences and enriching the group.” A group which is made up not only of  Spanish as a Foreign Language teachers “since we have also had teachers of other foreign languages.”

Enele 2017 is entitled “Create, play, thrill: Exploring new paths in Spanish as a Foreign Language Teaching.” Speakers at the plenary conference, for the three modules and the three workshops are all well-known specialists in Spanish as a Foreign Language with considerable experience in teacher training.

They are looking to offer new pedagogical possibilities which will lead to active learning and greater participation on the part of the students in constructing knowledge of the language and culture they are pursuing. They will provide measures to awaken students’ curiosity and to create a classroom atmosphere which is conducive to learning.

More information on Enele is available on their webpage.
